I wanted to contribute something, so I put together a guide on Japanese counters, which I see come up a lot as a sticking point for beginners.

I'll try to keep it clear and not overwhelming. Please feel free to ask questions!

What are counters?

In Japanese, you can't just put a number next to a noun the way you can in English. Instead, you use a counter word (助数詞, josūshi) that depends on the type of thing you're counting. This is similar to English expressions like "a sheet of paper" or "three head of cattle" — except in Japanese, nearly everything requires a specific counter.

The big misconception: 〜つ is NOT universal

I see this come up a lot, so I want to address it first. Many textbooks introduce 〜つ (-tsu) as a "native Japanese" counter that works for "anything." This is partly true — and partly misleading.

〜つ works for:

Generic objects without a more specific counter (boxes, bags, packages, abstract things)
When you're not sure which counter to use

〜つ does NOT work well for:

People (use 〜人)
Long thin objects (use 〜本)
Animals (use 〜匹 or 〜頭)
Machines/vehicles (use 〜台)
Flat thin objects (use 〜枚)

Using 〜つ where a specific counter exists isn't grammatically "wrong" in casual speech, but it sounds unnatural and is incorrect on the JLPT. Think of 〜つ as your fallback, not your default.

Also: 〜つ only goes up to 9 (ここのつ). For 10 and above, you switch to Sino-Japanese numbers + a specific counter anyway.

The seven counters every N5 student should know

1. 〜つ (generic objects, 1–9)

Used for small, countable objects when no specific counter applies.

Example: りんごをみっつください。(Please give me three apples.)

2. 〜人 (-nin / -ri) — people

For counting people. This one has irregular readings for 1 and 2:

Example: 家族は四人です。(My family has four people.)

3. 〜本 (-hon / -bon / -pon) — long thin objects

For pens, bottles, rivers, roads, movies, phone calls — anything long and thin, or conceptually "linear."

The reading changes depending on the preceding number:

1本 → いっぽん
2本 → にほん
3本 → さんぼん
6本 → ろっぽん
8本 → はっぽん
10本 → じゅっぽん

Example: えんぴつを三本持っています。(I have three pencils.)

4. 〜枚 (-mai) — flat thin objects

For paper, tickets, plates, shirts, photographs — flat and thin.

Regular readings (no surprises): いちまい、にまい、さんまい...

Example: チケットが二枚あります。(There are two tickets.)

5. 〜匹 (-hiki / -biki / -piki) — small animals

For fish, insects, cats, dogs, and most small-to-medium animals. (Large animals like cows and horses use 〜頭 -tō instead, but that's N4+ territory.)

1匹 → いっぴき
3匹 → さんびき
6匹 → ろっぴき
8匹 → はっぴき

Example: 猫が三匹います。(There are three cats.)

6. 〜台 (-dai) — machines and vehicles

For cars, bikes, computers, TVs, washing machines — anything mechanical or motorized.

Regular readings: いちだい、にだい、さんだい...

Example: 車が一台あります。(There is one car.)

7. 〜杯 (-hai / -bai / -pai) — cups and containers

For glasses, cups, bowls of food — things you drink or eat from a container.

1杯 → いっぱい
2杯 → にはい
3杯 → さんばい
6杯 → ろっぱい

Example: コーヒーを一杯飲みました。(I drank one cup of coffee.)

Quick reference table

A note on sound changes

You probably noticed that 〜本, 〜匹, and 〜杯 all have irregular sound changes. This is rendaku (連濁) and assimilation — the counter's initial consonant changes based on the number preceding it. It's not random: there are patterns (numbers ending in く、ち、つ tend to trigger p sounds; numbers ending in ん trigger b sounds). Once you see the pattern, it clicks.
