How long does it realistically take to go from N4 to N3?

Buenas! Acabo de pasar N4 en diciembre y ya estoy pensando en N3. La pregunta es: ¿cuánto tiempo realista necesito?

I'm trying to figure out if July is doable or if I should aim for December instead. I study about 1-1.5 hours daily, use Anki for vocab, and I've been working through Tobira slowly.

For those who've made the jump from N4 to N3 — how long did it take you? And what was the hardest part? I've heard grammar is a big wall but I want to hear from people who actually did it.

Took me about 5 months of consistent study. The grammar jump is the bottleneck — you go from maybe 100-120 grammar points at N4 to like 350+ at N3. Vocab was manageable with Anki but grammar required actual textbook work.

Tobira is a good choice. I'd add Shin Kanzen Master N3 Grammar once you finish the first half of Tobira. July is tight but not impossible if you're disciplined.

Depends entirely on your reading volume. Grammar can be crammed; reading comprehension cannot. The N3 reading section is where most people underperform because the passages are longer and the questions require inference, not just pattern matching.

My recommendation: start reading NHK Web Easy daily now, and move to regular NHK articles by April. If you can read those comfortably by May, July is realistic.

Living in Japan helps obviously, but even here it took me 4 months of focused study on top of daily immersion. The thing people don't tell you is that N3 listening is way faster than N4. Like, noticeably faster. You need to train your ear specifically for that.

I used podcast shadowing for 30 min every morning. That plus timed practice tests made the biggest difference.

Yo lo hice en 6 meses pero estudiaba 2 horas diarias mínimo. No hay atajo. Lo que más me costó fue la lectura — los textos de N3 son otro nivel comparado con N4.

Si vas para julio, empieza ya con simulacros completos para que veas cómo es el formato. A mí me sirvió hacer uno al mes para medir progreso.
